Reply from the organizers about my mail regarding Tata Crucible Hyderabad 2008

I feel it is necessary (from my point of view) to let everyone know the reply provided by the organizers regarding the Tata Crucible Campus Hyderabad 2008 mail that I’d sent.. (If you do not know about it, Click here)

Inline is the mail sent..

Dear Mr.Rohit Nair,
We are in receipt of your email dated , 27 Feb 2008, with observations made by you with respect to the campus edition of Tata Crucible 2008.
Ref your query on the identity / validity of Tata Crucible Hyderabad Champions Anirudh Janak & Aditya N representing ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants).
Tata Crucible participation rules allows students from all disciplines to take part, requires both team members to be from the same institution and carry valid identification proof from the institute they represent. The above team had fulfilled all these criteria; hence they were allowed to take part.
We would also like to place on record that as winners of the Hyderabad edition of the quiz, they have provided the authentication letters from their institute as required by the rules of the event.
Your mail also draws our attention to a possibility that they are part of another institution, pursuing another course. If the system of education in the country permits that, they are legally at no fault in pursuing educational courses as per the law of the land. With respect to Tata Crucible, what matters is the proof produced by the teams as per the rules of participation that are defined by us.
In this case, the concerned team, did meet the requirements as defined at this point in time. We, trust this clarifies our stand on the query raised by you.

I have nothing more to say… I guess this paves the way to all Crucible aspirants to take up distance learning courses, team up with the best in the country and participate in any city that they want.. The Tata organizers will not stop you as its right to do so under the ‘Educational policy’ of the country…
Cheers
Rohit

The TATA Crucible organisers are crazy. They are only trying t cover thier asses now. They know they screwed up when they allowed the “team” from ICAI to participate. But they are not willing to retratct.

The guilty either gets defensive or shuts up…Guess, they have done the former.

Anyway, I am not from the world of quizzing, so I maybe wrong with this…but I feel that there should be a system which allows one to participate either as a student or a corporate at all times, in all quizzes…not change roles from a corporate to a student or vice versa whenever they so wish.

Hmm..off to a ‘eventful’ start.. ;) Man.. the holy grail of quizzing was thought to be be the last man standing..even that is mired in controversies!

so technicaly now i can team up wid a60yrold uncle doing his CA or something and win the crucible and let people blame the education system for that.
on a serious not why the tatas would not want to change anything would be beacause the WINNERS if i may say so were from a Wild Card round and they will have to redo the entire thing.

    Hi, Rohit,

just read your mail, its quite sad that the
organisor’s are turning a blind eye to what all
manipulation is happening, at are not seeing the
larger picture, that this gives hope to every student
to not only be a winner; but using unethical ways to
    achieve his target.

i saw their reply, it shows that are have actually now
understood that there is something wrong in the rules,
and this needs to be corrected,

they should set an example for us by going into the
details and declaring that the winners be scraped or
the rules be changed immediately, since everything is
in public domain, nobody wants to change anything,
atleast not the organisors since it tarnishes their
    images!

    Dear Rohit,
Things are not quite right in Tata Crucible. This year Kolkata
round of student edition was won by KIIT,B’neshwar. The same team
participated in the 2007 corporate edition in B’neshwar. If you are a
student then you should not be allowed in the corporate version, and
vice versa. Thanks for atleast raising your voice.

This is more insidious my friend. It allows any two aspiring CAs or indeed any 2 CAs to get together as part of an ‘institute’ you could possibly allow alumni associations to get together under this clause.

Hey, lets do some common course from some college and then participate in the “name” of that college and win… I think that will show them the “system” and what it represents…

    Hi Rohit…

I have been visiting your blog for many months now and I would like to congratulate you for making such a database of questions. I completely agree with your point of view regarding the Crucible incident…

I think Tata ppl are doing this because they know something is Seriously wrong in the system. But let bygones be bygones….
I have the questions for Tata Crucible Delhi round. Do I post them in a comment or do I mail them to you. It will be good if you add them to your ever increasing compilation.

    Hi Rohit,

It really is a sad day for quizzing when the organisers of Crucible use the education system as their shield. This year has not been a good year for Crucible anyway. Poor Giri has to actually conduct a 12-team final for a half-hour TV telecast. 12 teams on stage?? Come on Tatas(and Giri)!! Even the annual circus at MMRDA/Mahalakshmi Race Course makes more sense than that.

Good luck to the teams who have actually prepared for this quiz. (Coz luck is the only thing that can help any team win this year).
In any case, Tata Crucible has ensured that I can now participate in both, Corporate and Student round. What an awesome loophole!

Maybe next year we can have a circus at Crucible a la Brand Equity, and get a clown to conduct it instead of a good QM like Giri.

With all these mails, underhanded tactics, strong opinions being voiced, loopholes being exploited etc, I fear that quizzing has evolved from a student pastime/adult hobby, into a full-blown business. It is quite sad. I believe that clubs like Bombay Quiz Club, QFI etc. can go a long way in bringing about some sort of sanity. Maybe we all need to sit back and think about how a lot of us (altho there definitely are exceptions among us) have made greed-for-prize-money the driving factor in us participating in quizzes. Maybe, just maybe, this situation is just an inevitable progression.
