By the late1890’s Thomas Edison’s General Electric Company and Charles Coffin’s Thomas-Houston Company had both secured patents over several key technologies. As both businesses expanded, it had become increasingly difficult for either company to produce complete electrical installations relying solely on their own patents and technologies. In 1892, the two companies combined to form the General Electric Company.

– It was one of the original 12 companies listed in the Dow Jones index and 115 years later, remains the only one.
– It is currently listed as the 6th largest US-based company in Fortune 500.
– GE was the first U.S. company to ever use an electrical computer in 1954. The Remington Rand Univac weighed 30 tons and had over 5,000 vacuum tubes.
– GE was one of the earliest companies to get into computing. It followed IBM (referred to as ‘Snow White’) and was one of the 7 companies (‘Seven Dwarves’) that followed it in the 1960s.
– The GE building located at 30, Rockefeller Plaza is the headquarters of NBC studios. It’s nickname serves as the title of the popular sitcom 30 Rock.
– The headquarters of GE at Schenectady, New York receives numerous letters from children before Christmas as they believe that it is only obvious that Santa Claus has the ZIP code 12345.
– The company suffered losses of $800 million in insurance after the 9/11 attacks.
– GE was embroiled in controversy after the 2011 Tsunami catastrophe when it was found that 6 reactors in the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan were designed by it.
– In 1911, the National Electric Lamp Association (NELA) was dissolved and absorbed into General Electric.
– Nela Park is the headquarters of GE Lighting, and is located in East Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Today, GE Lighting is a part of GE Consumer & Industrial, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. Nela Park still serves as the operating headquarters of the lighting division.
– The GE logo was introduced on lamps and electrical appliances in 1907. Two years later “Mazda” was adopted as the trademark for certain lamps produced by GE after Mazda, the Persian God of Light.
