NSMQ Gwalior | Review and Questions

Ajay Poonia shares the review and questions from NSMQ Gwalior. You can also get some questions from here
The Gwalior leg of the 8th NSMQ was held in the scenic campus of ITM biz school. Situated about 10km from the main city ITM played host to 40 teams from Gwalior, Ujjain, Indore and even Jaipur. The latter trying to play it smart on its bid to outsmart the rest of the teams by opting for Gwalior as its NSMQ destination. With only 1 point separating the team that came 2nd and the team that stood 7th in the prelims, our task to eliminate 1 team turned out to be extremely difficult. The finals had a decent mix of business, management, sports and current affairs. By the end of the first round it was clear that the fight for the Gwalior NSMQ champion will be between the boys from Jaipur and the boys from the venue host. At the end of the first round Jaipur-35, ITM- 40. This got the LNMIIT students from Jaipur a little impatient as they went for a few negatives in the second round. The pressure got to the ITM boys as well as they focussed more on trying their best to crack each and every question hurled at them instead of strategizing well and challenging others to answer the questions. The more experienced team from LNMIIT, Jaipur held on to their nerve till the end as their bid to outsmart the less experienced teams from MP proved successful when ITM couldn’t identify the athletes mentioned at the end of Paan Singh Tomar while they could identify Shibulal and Kris Gopalkrishnan as the Infosys founders.
Final Scores- LNMIIT- 55, ITM- 44, ITM team 2 with 12

The Second edition of Tata Crucible, Trichy was held today. We were amazed to see the large number of teams that turned out(Pickbrain mentioned that the count was 192 and it was more than double the count of last year).  It was so large that we did not get seats in the hall. We were then made to sit on the dias on the chairs where the finalists were supposed to sit. At that time, we dint know it was a harbinger for what was going to happen later in the day.

Tata Crucible 2012

The biggest Business Quiz for Students is back! 24 cities – 24 champions – 1 National Champion.

Not only is the Tata Crucible a chance to be crowned the Best Business Quizzers in the country but also a fantastic platform to monetize your year long preparations. The Tata Crucible Campus Edition , now in its 8th year, will be hosted by quizmaster Giri Pickbrain Balasubramaniam and will be spread over 50 days!

Rules for the year remain almost the same as the previous years with clearer indications for teams from colleges where there are no centres (participate in the closest centre by geographical distance and all teams from the same college must participate at one centre)

But as usual what surprises us is no action being taken on Professional courses like ICAI and ICWA. Its just unfair to the students of ICAI that they have to hear the brickbats of a 1000 students!!

Know Kolkata Quiz | Quiz Review

Know Kolkata Quiz’ held at Modern High School for Girls, part of the ongoing ‘Kolkata Festival’ saw some brilliant contests. Quizmaster for the morning was Mir. The quiz was all about who knew his or her city the best.
The parents also participated in the quiz along with their children, which made it all the more interactive and fun. The quiz made parents feel like school children once again, sitting on stage participating in a school quiz.
There were eight teams with each team consisting of two schoolgirls with their respective parent. The first round was called ‘mixed bag’ where each team had to choose a subject on which they were quizzed.
Subjects varied from language, public buildings, clubs, markets, sports, politics and literature to fiction. The variety in subjects and the questions asked made the session very interesting and each team did superbly in the first round.
This was followed by ‘who am I’ which was about guessing a given personality or subject through a clue. The ‘audio round’ followed next. Then there was quite an innovative round called ‘make the connection’. Each team was given a set of four words and they had to find a connection between them. Some teams struggled to find a connection while for others it was a cake walk.
‘Audience round’ saw the audience interacting and taking part in the quiz. It was quite a break for the contestants before the ‘buzzer round’ which was for the quick thinkers.
The quiz ended with team D winning the first prize. Team B was the runner-up. The quiz was followed by an exquisite exhibition called Magical Kolkata which was a joint effort of students and their parents

The Hindu NIE Arena 2011, an Inter-School Mega Sports Quiz | Quiz Review

The Hindu NIE Arena 2011, an Inter-School Mega Sports Quiz | Quiz Review

They got a sporting chance

A moment of joy: The winners with the chief guest and the sponsors.

The Hindu’s latest Newspaper in Education initiative, Arena, had a grand start. The inter-school mega sports quiz had sports enthusiasts sitting at the edge of their seats.

Do you read the sports page of the newspaper the first thing in the morning? Are sporting legends not just your idols but gods? Do you care more about your favourite football club’s standing in the league or about the status of the injured cricketer in the team than your outcome in the exam? Then you would have loved Arena!

The Hindu NIE Arena 2011, an inter-school mega sports quiz presented by Indian Overseas Bank, was held recently in the city of Chennai. Over 410 teams from 105 schools sat through the prelims where the teams had to write down answers to questions distributed to them. While that was being evaluated, the crowd comprising sports enthusiasts, students and teachers were kept entertained by the team from Radio One.

By the end of it six teams comprising two students each from PS Senior Secondary School, DAV Public School (Velachery), Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Hindu Senior Secondary School, Bala Vidya Mandir and Zion Matriculation were selected.

In keeping with the theme of the quiz, the quizmaster was Dr. Sumanth C. Raman, an avid sports quizzer and host of the DD Podhigai’s BSNL Sports Quiz.

With the stage set for the final clash, the questions categorised into seven rounds were fired at the teams. The rounds comprised general questions, audio, photo/video, dumb charades and rapid fire. It wasn’t just the teams on stage that were racking their brains to answer the question, even the young audience were constantly jumping out of their seats to get the quizmaster’s attention to answer. And they were promptly rewarded with chocolates.

At Arena, everyone walked away with interesting gyan like the Indian government’s efforts to promote tender coconut water as an ideal sports drink, that Jesse Owens visited The Hindu office in Chennai in 1955, that the Maharaja of Porbandar captained India’s first test series overseas. There was also a fun clipping of a sports person dancing in his hotel room to a pop song and the teams had to identify him. To everyone’s amusement it turned out to be Kamran Akmal, the Pakistani cricketer.

Proud winners

After sevens rounds of battling it out and even acting it out (in the dumb charades round), the team from Bala Vidya Mandir comprising Siddhartha S. Nathan and Vedanth Murali, both Std IX students, clinched the first place. They won a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, besides Hercules Rodeo bicycles and computer desks from Zuari Furniture.

Apoorv Abhishek and S. Adityaram from Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Chetpet, came second to bag the cash prize of Rs. 15,000. While Swati Hemant and Arjun Aravind from P.S.S.S.S. who placed third walked away with cash prize of Rs. 10,000. The remaining three teams won cash prizes of Rs. 5000 each.

Actor K. Dhanush, the chief guest who received a rousing welcome from the children, congratulated the winners and added, “Those who were placed fourth, fifth and sixth, don’t worry. That’s where I was usually placed too and I am doing pretty well in life.” He also stressed on the importance of giving one’s best even for the simplest of attempts. “You’ll never know where it’ll take you. That’s what happened with Kolaveri too.”

Mr. M. Narendra, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Overseas Bank, was present too and shared how happy he was to be a part of the initiative and see youngsters enthusiastically participating in the quiz.

Runners upSIDDHARTHA S. NATHAN and VEDANTH MURALI, Std IX, Bala Vidya Mandir: We love sports. We are part of various sports teams in school and also avidly follow sports news. Since we were tied in the final rounds, we had to play strategically. One wrong answer would have cost us. That’s why even when we knew the answer for a couple of questions, since we weren’t sure we didn’t want to take the risk. But we are happy it paid off.

APOORV ABHISHEK and A. ADITYARAM, Std IX, Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School: We got to know about the quiz just the previous day and hence didn’t have much time to prepare. But since we regularly read the sports news, especially during the lunch breaks in school, it helped a lot. The quiz was fun and we really enjoyed participating in it.

SWATI HEMANT (Std IX) and ARJUN ARAVIND (Std VIII), P.S.S.S.S.: We’re into sports, that is we play, read books and look up news in the Internet. And that helped us in this quiz. Besides, we’re avid quizzers too. We liked the video rounds. We were extremely surprised that one of our really wild guesses for a question on cricketer Imran Khan turned out to be correct.

K. and Shaheen Jamil — and last year’s runners up, Questionable Characters (Rohini Dinesh, Sushmita Gupta and Udayan Gupta) displayed amazing performances to put up a brave fight to finish second and third (after a tie-breaker) respectively.

ISG Sreeraag Mohan and team (Sreeraag Mohan T, Darshan Regi Kalathil, R. Rajaganapathy Sankar) were crowned the school quiz champions.

ISM Quizzing ISMiites (Rohan Karnawat, Srujan Keskar, Shuvankar Goswami) and ISG Anmol Kakaria and team (Anmol Kakaria, Fahd Rayees, Anirudh Sen) finished first and second runners up respectively.

But the true champions of the evening were, of course, the audiences, who turned up in huge numbers despite the rain clouds looming large over the skies. They didn’t allow the thoughts of inconvenience the rains could have brought to dissuade them from attending this Times of Oman event that’s so close to their hearts.

Speaking to Times of Oman, quizmaster Giri ‘Pickbrain’ Balasubramanium said, “My first reaction is that the true winners of today’s (Thursday’s) event are the audience of Muscat. No two ways about it. It is amazing that despite the climate that prevailed, people turned out in such large numbers. It is their reflection of solidarity to an event like this.”

Sharing his thoughts on the champions, Know Brainers, Giri said, “The winners were an outstanding team. They have been waiting in the wings for way too long. I think they will win a few more finals. It is just the beginning for them.”

About the runners up, Mostly Clueless and Questionable Characters, Giri said, “They were known and expected to do well. It was a few tactical errors here and there that led them to lose. Facts like not getting their hands to the buzzer fast enough cost them some points.”

Explaining that this has been the closest TOOOQC that Muscat has ever witnessed so far, Giri said, “That to me is the changing times. Till it got to the buzzer it was five teams battling. So I think it was outstanding.”

Giri also suggested that Times of Oman should now restart the school quiz.

“I am sure the public here who root for a knowledge property like the TOOOQC wants that and would welcome that,” Giri noted.

TOOOQC was presented by Samsung. The major sponsors were Muscat Pharmacy, Pocari Sweat, Perfumes and Cosmetics. The co-sponsors were Sohar Aluminum, Al Mudhish and Delicio. Jet Airways was the official airlines and Sixt was the official rent a car company.

The official hosts were Platinum Hotel. The venue sponsors were Badr Al Samaa, Oasis Water, Shah Nagardas Manji, E-Travels and Tours, Malabar Gold, New India Assurance, Hoshan Trading, Apparel International and Spicy Village. The prelims of TOOOQC was organised at the Indian School Ghubra auditorium.

Earlier, Lakshmi Kothaneth, host for the evening, gave a perfect start to the proceedings, welcoming the huge crowd which voice voted the decision to shift TOOOQC to the month of December.

The event was earlier held in the month of April.

The event started with the school quiz, with team members — ISM Unchartered (Ashwin Menon, Arun Philips, Daniel Joseph), PSM Crashers (Aly Reza, Hager Abdul Sami, Syed Tumail Jafri), ISD Master Minds (Pranav R Krishnan, Francis Cilwin, Hadi Jamal), ISG Anmol Kakaria and team (Anmol Kakaria, Fahd Rayees, Anirudh Sen), ISM Quizzing ISMiites (Rohan Karnawat, Srujan Keskar, Shuvankar Goswami), ISG Sreeraag Mohan and team (Sreeraag Mohan T, Darshan Regi Kalathil, R Rajaganapathy Sankar), ISD Talent Knights (Mithun Prasad, Collins Jacob, Kelisto Chalissery) and ISWK iQuiz (Krishna Kamath, Lolith Lohidhakshan, Mohammed Suhail P M) providing exhilarating moments for the quiz.

Electrifying touches

Whether it was the rounds ‘first frontiers’ or ‘snap shots’ or the ‘final countdown’, the quizmaster, the school team members, and the audiences lent electrifying touches to the action.

Lauding the school teams for their participation, Giri said, “Hats off to their nerves and talent. It is not easy for the school children to perform with a 5,000 audience watching them.”

Before the start of the mega finals where the two school team toppers competed with the six open teams, a short film marking 15 years of Times of Oman Open Quiz Contest (TOOOQC) was screened.

At the mega finals, the open quiz teams— Know Brainers(Sujatha Ashok, R S Sumanth, Raji Sumanth), Three D (Armstrong Jeyakumar, Sangeetha Sridhar, Dr Rajan Philips), TBTF (Nitin Aravind, Roshan Kamath, Namrata Sheshadri), Mostly Clueless (Dr Anupam Kakaria, Shafeek M K, Shaheen Jamil), Questionable Characters (Rohini Dinesh, Sushmita Gupta, Udayan Gupta) and Roaring 40s (Sridhar Babu, Jacob Chandy, Harish Bilgi), ISG Sreeraag Mohan and team and ISM Quizzing ISMiites, provided impressive touches by cracking some very difficult questions.

The many rounds — including ‘global update’, ‘global vision’, ‘global crosswords’, ‘global connections’, ‘global preferences’ — had interesting oral and visual questions.

Most questions for the quiz were taken straight from the Times of Oman newspaper published last year and the round “global crosswords” had segments named after sections appearing in Times such as Extra, Entertainment, Market, Connect, Mind Games, and Commentary among others.

For the first time in a quiz in Muscat in the round ‘global preferences’, each team was quizzed on their preferences based on a form the teams had filled up during the prelims. Giri’s team in India worked on the questions once they received the filled in forms from the teams. The questions to each team were on what the teams like in life. In 45 seconds, they had to answer five questions on their subjects of preference.

Pickbrain kept the audience entertained by passing the unanswered questions from teams to them and also hurling special questions at them. Correct answers were followed by many gifts. From the grade four ISM student Ankith to seasoned quizzers like Murali R, they cracked tough questions to win some fabulous prizes.

The audiences answered five multiple choice questions via SMS to take home interesting gifts.

The quiz proved that one should always keep one’s quest for knowledge alive.

“Since the start of Times Quiz, I have seen so many new faces putting above average efforts to make it to the finals and win. It is a fabulous event,” said Riyas, country manager of Sea Pearls.
